Ch. Rhinevale RobinellaThe Keeshond has a long history as a companion dog. A member of the Spitz family this breed originated as the Dutch Barge Dog. The attributes are high intelligence, extremely good temperament and suitability to live within a family group. They instinctively guard their homes. The dense, thick luxurious coat obviously requires attention, but the trouble is not excessive for those who like a friendly dog who will do all to please his or her owner. This book covers all aspects of keeping, breeding and showing this likeable dog. It traces the history and development of the breed and assesses its place in various countries throughout the world.

Margo EmersonMargo Emerson

As a child Margo had been brought up with terriers which established her affinity with dogs. She saw her first Keeshond in the early thirties when Miss Hastings of the Evenlode kennel was moving into her new home in Henley-on-Thames. The young Mrs Emerson was attracted by the breed's good looks and personality. It was to be the start of a long association with the Keeshond and remained her chief interest until she died in 1999.

While on a visit to Germany's Rhine Valley, Margo saw the type of Keeshond that she wanted to breed and so decided to name her kennel after this beautiful region. Rhinevale soon set a new standard in Keeshond breeding that became a benchmark for the future. Many of today's established kennels started with Rhinevale dogs and, under Margo's expert guidance, became successful breeders, ready to carry on the legacy.

As a respected international judge and a breed columnist in Our Dogs for over 40 years, this book represents a triumph of her skill and dedication. It shows her love for the breed and ensures that her key part in the Keeshond story will be recorded for all time. It is a must for Keeshond enthusiasts the world over.

During the period from its initial conception, in 1994, to its publication, in 2000, all breed judges passed to award Challenge Certificates (as well as a number of respected and similarly qualified all-round judges) were regularly consulted with regards to the content of this, the first, Illustrated Breed Standard of the Keeshond. This has ensured that this unique publication is a true interpretation of the, Kennel Club approved, written Breed Standard.

The value of the Illustrated Breed Standard is immense as it clearly depicts though written text, drawings and photographs all the individual points of the breed as defined in the written Standard.

The Pictorial Standard, at the centrefold, clearly shows each part of the Keeshond in canine terminology. This and the other illustrations will impart a greater understanding of the Keeshond and its construction beneath its glamorous coat.

A great debt of gratitude is owed to all those who have given their time so generously to peruse both the original manuscript and its subsequent amendments. A special thank you must also be given to the breed specialists Mrs. P. Luckhurst (Gavimir) and Mr. M. Stockman (Valsgate) who have spent many hours reading the various drafts to provide constructive comments and advice. Also to Mr. John Beacock for his invaluable help and patience during the course of setting out the text and various illustrations.

The committee of The Keeshond Club is to be congratulated for having the foresight in agreeing to fund this project. They will be gratified by the words of two of our most senior all-round breed judges, Mrs Ferelith Somerfield and Mrs Liz Cartledge, who after reading the final draft pronounced "A blue print for other breeds to follow" and “If all breeds had an illustrated standard this good, then we would all be much better judges".
